American Edinburgh University student 'driven insane' by how people pay in UK

An American student living and studying in Edinburgh has been sharing the differences she noticed between the UK and the US on TikTok.

Scarlett moved from the US to the UK when she started studying medicine in Edinburgh and has taken to the social media platform to document her life in the Scottish capital.

In a video entitled "Differences between the US and the UK Part 27" (yes, Scarlett has been sharing her observations for some time), the Edinburgh Uni student shared something that drives her 'absolutely insane' when it comes to paying for things in the UK.

Scarlett explained: "In the UK there is such a thing as bank transfers - it's where you can get the account details of somebody else's bank and you can just send them money directly.

"This is not a thing in the US and it drives me crazy because IT IS SO GOOD.

"Instead in the US you have to use things like Paypal or Venmo and sure, it's an okay way of transferring money but I swear to you it's not as good, not as convenient.

"I love it, you can transfer big things, or just small amounts between your friends - IT'S SO GOOD."

The video has now been liked over 110k times with people flocking to the comments section to point out that it's not just the UK who have bank transfers available.

In a comment that's had over 800 likes, one person wrote: "WAIT WHAT? That’s not only about the UK it’s about the whole world."

"It's not a UK thing, it's a everyone else thing, we got that here in Africa," another added.

One TikTok user said: "It never fails to surprise me how far behind the US is from the rest of the world."
