American climber Mallory Geis among ten killed in Pakistan Broad Peak avalanche

  • Search teams on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan located the remains of American mountaineer Mallory Geis following a fatal avalanche that killed all 10 members of an international expedition.
  • Renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja led the 10-person group, which lost contact with base camp on July 30 before being swept away in one of Pakistan's deadliest recent climbing disasters.
  • Rescuers and local volunteers have recovered the bodies of several climbers, including Purja, Geis, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, Nepalese climber Bahadur Gurung, and Omani climber Nathira Ahmed.
  • Severe weather in the Karakoram range has grounded search-and-rescue helicopters, complicating ongoing recovery operations for the remaining victims.
  • Mountaineers, diplomats, and local citizens gathered for a candlelight vigil in Islamabad to honor the climbers, who hailed from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, Britain, and the United States.
