Imagine earning $54,000 a year but spending $74,000, then borrowing the difference while your existing debt continues accumulating interest. That’s roughly the financial predicament facing the United States government, except the numbers are measured in trillions rather than thousands.

The federal government ended fiscal year 2026 with a budget deficit of approximately $1.99 trillion, according to Reuters’ reporting on the latest Treasury Department figures. That’s about $217 billion more than the previous year, making it the largest annual deficit since 2021.
