AMC is bringing back the chilling anthology series, The Terror, for a highly anticipated third season. The cable network recently announced at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that the upcoming season, titled Devil in Silver, will be based on the novel by Victor LaValle. Set to air in 2025, the six-episode season will be co-written by LaValle and Chris Cantwell, known for his work on AMC's Halt and Catch Fire.
Devil in Silver follows the gripping story of Pepper, a working-class moving man trapped in New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital under false pretenses. Within the walls of the institution, he encounters patients who conspire against him, doctors harboring grim secrets, and the possibility of encountering the Devil himself. As Pepper navigates this nightmarish reality, he realizes that his only chance for freedom lies in confronting the entity that thrives on the suffering within the hospital. However, he soon discovers that his own inner demons may be his most formidable adversaries.
The role of Pepper has yet to be cast, but the production boasts an impressive team of executive producers. David Zucker from Scott Free, Alexandra Milchan from Emjag, Guymon Casady from Management 360, and Scott Lambert from Anjulia Productions join Cantwell and LaValle as executive producers. Additionally, Karyn Kusama, known for her work on Showtime's Yellowjackets, will also serve as an executive producer and direct the first two episodes.
Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, expressed his excitement for the new installment of The Terror, praising the previous seasons for their ability to combine real-world events and characters with a haunting supernatural twist. McDermott believes that Devil in Silver presents an incredible opportunity and anticipates collaborating with Chris Cantwell once again to deliver a remarkable adaptation of LaValle's renowned and unsettling novel.
The first season of The Terror premiered in 2018, captivating audiences with the compelling story of a stranded crew in the Canadian Arctic. Season two, titled Infamy, followed in 2019 and took place during World War II. Both seasons received critical acclaim, showcasing the series' ability to create atmospheric horror rooted in historical contexts.
Christopher Cantwell describes the upcoming season as a disquieting tale that explores the forgotten and neglected individuals in society. It delves into the internal struggle of the protagonist, Pepper, as he faces the Devil within himself and countless broken systems surrounding him. Cantwell is thrilled to be collaborating with Victor LaValle and AMC on this bone-chilling venture, promising to deliver spine-chilling thrills to audiences.
LaValle describes Devil in Silver as a horror story inspired by his observations of the world, intertwined with a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. He expresses his gratitude to Christopher Cantwell for joining him on this journey and commends his ability to infuse empathy, humor, and tragedy into their collaboration. LaValle believes AMC is the perfect home for their show, highlighting the network's enthusiasm and support throughout the development process.
The announcement of The Terror's return comes at a time when AMC, like other networks, has reduced the number of scripted original series in its lineup. Alongside The Terror, AMC's current slate includes popular franchises like The Walking Dead, the Anne Rice universe (with adaptations of Interview With the Vampire and Mayfair Witches), as well as the upcoming series Parish and Orphan Black: Echoes.
The revival of The Terror follows in the footsteps of other successful anthologies such as FX's Feud and HBO's True Detective. While Ryan Murphy continues his involvement in Feud, he has entrusted a new showrunner to lead the series. HBO, on the other hand, owns True Detective and recently aired a season without creator Nic Pizzolatto at the helm, featuring the talented Jodie Foster.
As fans eagerly await Devil in Silver, AMC's announcement has generated immense anticipation for another mind-bending and spine-tingling journey into The Terror's terrifying world. The series has proven its ability to captivate and unsettle audiences, and this latest installment promises to be no exception. With a compelling story, talented team, and the perfect home on AMC, Devil in Silver is poised to bring audiences to the edge of their seats once again.
