Ambassador Bolton warns of constitutional crisis under potential Trump presidency

Donald Trump Former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally in Sioux City

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers of a second Trump presidency in a recent foreword to a book. Bolton, who worked closely with President Trump, expressed concerns about the possibility of a constitutional crisis and the breakdown of government functions if Trump were to refuse to leave office. He argued that Trump's disregard for limits and obsession with personal glory could lead to litigation and controversy, making it difficult for the country to return to normalcy after his departure.

Discussing Trump's handling of international affairs, Bolton highlighted his lack of comprehension of the national interest or American national security. He claimed that Trump's decision-making was driven by personal relationships with foreign leaders, particularly authoritarian ones, rather than grounded in national security considerations. Bolton expressed worry about Trump's inconsistency, short attention span, and the inability to make sound decisions during times of crisis. He emphasized the need for a resolute president who can prioritize national security over personal image.

Bolton further criticized Trump's interactions with foreign leaders, suggesting that they saw him as an easy target. He claimed that Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, and others perceived Trump as a laughing fool and were prepared to take advantage of him. Bolton pointed to Trump's tendency to prioritize his own image over substantive outcomes as a concerning factor in his decision-making.

Regarding the current situation in the Middle East, Bolton argued that Trump's lack of knowledge and inconsistency made him unfit to handle major international crises. He highlighted the danger posed by Trump's weakness, as it could provoke adversaries rather than deter them.

When asked about the choice between Trump and Biden in terms of national security, Bolton expressed concern about both candidates. He criticized Biden for his perceived weakness and argued that American strength was crucial in avoiding provocation. Bolton stated that having to choose between two unsatisfactory options was a difficult situation, as both candidates could negatively impact national security.

In terms of Iran, Bolton criticized Biden's approach, claiming that the president had been unwilling to admit Iran's role in ongoing conflicts. He called for a stronger response to Iran's aggression, including targeting their infrastructure.

Bolton's foreword has sparked attention, with the Biden campaign using it to highlight concerns about a potential second Trump presidency. However, Bolton criticized both candidates and expressed worries about the country's weakening position globally, calling for a do-over in the nomination process for both parties.
