Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly developing an animated Warhammer 40,000 event series, with Henry Cavill attached as an executive producer. The project is being developed alongside the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series, in which Cavill is also set to star and executive produce.
According to multiple reports, the animated series is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop. Amazon has declined to comment on the project.
The series is being developed as a spin-off of the anthology series Secret Level and will be co-created and directed by Dave Wilson, who previously directed the Warhammer 40,000 episode of Secret Level .
The story will focus on The Deathwatch, an elite chapter of Space Marines tasked with hunting alien threats across the Imperium.
The animated series was first reported by Variety and is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios and Games Workshop.
Speaking about the project, Wilson told Variety : "Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories."
He added that the response to the Warhammer episode encouraged the team to expand the universe. "The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right."
Wilson also spoke about his long-held ambition to tell a larger story in the franchise. "This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it."
Meanwhile, Amazon's live-action Warhammer 40,000 series remains in development, with Cavill leading the project. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass , has reportedly joined the live-action adaptation and is expected to begin work on the scripts.
Secret Level premiered in December 2024 and is available to stream on Prime Video.
The new animated series marks a major expansion of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise on screen. With Games Workshop directly involved in production and Cavill overseeing both the live-action and animated adaptations, Amazon is building a broader television universe based on the popular tabletop game. Focusing on The Deathwatch allows the series to explore one of the franchise's most celebrated Space Marine units while expanding the story introduced in Secret Level .
