'Amazing' dad killed while helping baby ducks cross road pictured as tributes pour in

A dad who was fatally run down as he herded a raft of ducklings off a busy road has been named and pictured.

Casey Rivara died at the scene of the tragedy in Rocklin, California.

He managed to get the baby ducks to safety before being struck by a car on Stanford Ranch Road and Park drive - around 22 miles north of Sacramento - on Thursday evening.

A GoFundMe was set up by his aunt Tracey Rivara who explained Casey was driving his kids home from swimming practice when he saw a mother duck and her ducklings trying to cross the intersection.

"Casey got out of the car to help the ducks safely across the road," she said.

"However, when he was heading back to the car, he was tragically struck by a car and passed away at the scene."

She went on to say: "Casey met Angel, the love of his life, at age 17, when she joined his high school as an exchange student from Hong Kong.

"They quickly fell madly in love and remained inseparable partners for the past 23 years.

"They have been blessed with two beautiful children, Sophia (11) and James (6).

"His family was Casey’s world, and to remain even closer to them he had recently started working at their children's school.

"He loved working at the school as he was able to positively impact other children.

"Casey was the kindest, most amazing husband and father. Even his last act in this world was a sign of his compassion.

"The family is trying to figure out how to recover and keep going after this immense loss.

"If you would like to express your love and support for Angel and her family, we ask that you please contribute here in lieu of flowers, meals, and other acts of kindness."

William Wimsatt, 12, told 3KCRA he watched as Casey got out of his car to shooed the ducks as onlookers clapped "because he was being really nice".

The schoolboy took pictures of the heartwarming moment and said some cars stayed still even though the lights were green.

"He helped them get up over the curb because all the little baby duckies were having trouble and then he walked in front of our car," William told the channel.

"My mom rolled down the window and said, 'Good job, good job,' and I said, 'Good job' to him too and then right after that, the second after that...." he said the car hit him.

William said the car seemed to come out of nowhere.

"I didn't see the car actually hit him. All I remember is the sound and then him flying across the intersection," he said. "His shoes and one of his socks were right in front of our car."

William's mum got out of the car to comfort the man's children who saw what happened to their dad.

Summer Peterson told CBS 13 her children also saw the collision.

She said: "They were saying, 'Oh, it's so cute. It's so nice of him.' And then all of a sudden he was hit by a car."

In tribute to Casey, Summer and her children created a temporary memorial at the site of the incident and her son brought rubber ducks as a touching tribute.

In a statement, Rocklin Police said: "The driver remained at the scene of the collision.

"Emergency first responders arrived to assist, however the man died at the scene. The Major Accident Investigation Team was activated and responded to the area.

"No arrest was made, and the incident is still under investigation... We would like to extend our condolences to all involved in this tragic event."

A 17-year-old driver stayed at the scene to help police, and the local force is still investigating. No arrests have been made.
