Amanda Serrano calls for rule change for Katie Taylor super-fight

Amanda Serrano has called for her undisputed lightweight title against Katie Taylor to be contested over 12 three-minute rounds.

Serrano will attempt to hand undisputed lightweight champion Taylor her first professional loss on April 30 in "the biggest fight in women's boxing".

Women's boxing bouts are maximum of 10 rounds and just two minutes per round, whilst men's bouts are 12 rounds and three minutes each.

Top women's boxers such as Claressa Shields and Caroline Dubois have criticised the ruling in the past, with the WBC insisting the rule is because of safety reasons.

And Serrano said if Taylor was willing to accept the change, she wants their fight to be 12 three-minute rounds.

“I’m a woman for equality. If Katie Taylor’s willing, I’m ready and willing to make this 12 rounds of three minutes [each]," she said. "If we want to make change... [Let’s do] the same as the men.”

But Taylor played down the change and insisted her super-fight with Serrano is "already iconic" with 10 two minute rounds.

“I don’t really feel like that will make a huge change. The fight is already iconic the way it is,” she responded.

When Serrano again put forward her proposal, stating, “I think we need to make a stand,” Taylor responded by saying: “I think we’re already making a stand.”

Taylor defended her belts and picked up her 20th win as a professional when she outpointed Firuza Sharipova last December.

Much like her opponent, Serrano also picked up three wins in 2021 and finished her campaign with a one-sided beatdown of Miriam Gutierrez.

The Puerto Rican is unbeaten in almost 40 professional fights but is a slight underdog heading into her undisputed clash with Taylor.

Serrano insisted that she holds no ill-will against Taylor and respects her accomplishments in the sport.

"This is business, we're in the same business. I'm trying to be undisputed champion, I have nothing but respect for Katie as a champion and what she's done in the sport," she continued.

"Right now, I don't dislike her but come April 30 when I'm in that ring it's a whole different story, then after I can go back to liking her."

Jake Paul - who promotes Serrano - has revealed that both women will receive seven-figure paydays for the fight before any bonus money from plus pay-per-view sales.

Paul signed Serrano to his promotion label Most Valuable Promotions last September and has fulfilled his promise of setting up an undisputed fight against Taylor.
