Amanda Bynes has reportedly filed to end her conservatorship after almost nine years.
The 35-year-old actress has followed in the footsteps of Britney Spears - who was recently released from her controversial conservatorship after 13 years - and filed a petition to terminate the legal agreement.
According to Page Six, Amanda requested to end both the conservatorship of her person and estate in a petition submitted on Wednesday in California.
She also filed a capacity declaration, which requires updated records regarding Amanda’s mental health from a medical professional.
Her attorney David A. Esquibias confirmed the news in a statement, and told People : “Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”
A hearing for the star’s petition is scheduled for 22 March.
Back in 2013, Amanda was arrested for allegedly starting a fire in the driveway of a home in California, which resulted in her being held for 72 hours in an involuntary psychiatric hold as a mental health evaluation was carried out.
The She’s The Man star was placed under a conservatorship in August 2013, giving her mother Lynn control of Amanda's personal and medical decisions - as well as her financial affairs.
The conservatorship was due to end in 2020, but in September last year, it was extended until January 2023.
Amanda, who previously said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, first spoke out about the legal arrangement in 2020, after she announced her surprise engagement to Paul Michael, who she began dating after attending an AA meeting.
“Hey, y’all. I want to thank you guys so much for your support. The fact that you’ve been rooting for me for years means more than you know,” she began the post on Instagram.
“Today I want to talk about a controversial topic. My conservatorship case,” Amanda wrote, as she said she wanted to see a therapist, rather than attend a treatment centre, as it was much cheaper.
“This is why I’ve asked to see the judge next week regarding this conservatorship issue,” she went on.
“Thank you guys so much for hearing me out. I’m sorry that this is what I’m dealing with and I’m sorry to put my problems on the internet but this is what life has come to,” Amanda said.
“Thank you guys for always supporting me, love you all, peace out,” she added.
The former Nickelodeon star has been getting her life back on track in recent years, leading a quiet life near the beach, and studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
