ALW clubs should take a chance on Taiwan players: coach

Taiwan coach Chan Hiu Ming has urged A-League Women clubs to take a chance on signing his best players.

The Matildas had to fight past a plucky and lively Taiwan team, ranked No.41 in the world, to claim a 3-1 win at Melbourne's AAMI Park on Wednesday night.

Chan has noted how few of his players are regularly exposed to quality football and hoped the two-game series, which wraps up at Geelong's GMHBA Stadium on Saturday, could deliver those opportunities.

"(Striker Su Yu-hsuan) is one of the only two players that in our team is playing overseas. She plays in China," Chan said.

"So I really hope today, maybe some of the A-League teams can see our players' performance and try to give more opportunities to help.

"Because in our country, the league is still not yet as competitive as like an A-League or whatever.

"So last year (in Olympic qualifiers in Perth), I said the same because I really hope our players can have the chance to go abroad to learn more under this kind of intensity, then we will improve."

Taiwan's players, and Chan, exploded in delight with celebrations when Chen Jin-Wen scored in the 34th minute - the team's first goal against the Matildas since 2007.

"She's 21. She's still in the university, and at the beginning, when I picked up the team, she was not even in the first line-up in her club," Chan said.

"And then, since she is underestimated, I keep on encouraging her and then she got confidence and ... in the previous few games kept playing really goal.

"I told, 'you owe me a goal - if you score, you need to celebrate with me.' But after she scored she didn't come and celebrate. But at half-time she came.

"That's why I'm quite excited or a little bit emotional - because I tried to help this girl ... to put her in the best position - and then she scored today and became one of the heroes."

A "proud" Chan stopped short of expecting a win on Saturday but backed his team to improve.

"I hope at least on Saturday the performance is even better than today," he said.

"This is what I expect."
