Almost a third of drivers believe driving test should be taken again at 60 - survey

Almost a third of drivers believe people should re-sit their driving tests at 60 years old, according to a survey. There is no legal age in the UK at which drivers must stop getting behind the wheel.

There is also no age-related requirement to resit the driving test. However drivers must renew their licence at the age of 70, and every three years after that.

To renew their licence, drivers must confirm that their eyesight meets current standards. They must also not have any medical conditions that could affect their driving.

Compare the Market said its survey found nearly one in three drivers believe people should re-sit their driving tests when they reach the age of 60. The figure increased to more than one in two drivers who believed people should be tested again at 70.

There were national differences of opinion however, with 35% of drivers in Northern Ireland agreeing that drivers should retest when they reach 60, followed by 31% in Scotland. In contrast 28% of drivers in Wales agreed.

Almost one in three said they would not be able to repass their theory test. And when asked whether they would be capable of repassing their practical driving test, one in six said they would not - it was agreed by twice as many women as men.

The findings came in a Compare the Market survey about driving confidence across the UK. The company surveyed 2,016 UK drivers in February 2022.
