Ally McCoist steams in with Celtic added time clamp as devilish Chris Sutton in loaded Rangers wind up

Ally McCoist wasted no time in hitting back at Chris Sutton’s Rangers jibe after the former Celtic star claimed officials play on until the Ibrox side score.

The Light Blues struck twice in stoppage time at Pittodrie on Tuesday to claim a 3-2 victory after they had been staring a 2-1 defeat in the face. Duk and Leighton Clarkson had put Aberdeen in front after Fashion Sakala’s early opener, and the hosts were set for a first home win over the Ibrox side since 2016.

But Scott Arfield had other ideas, equalising as the Reds tried to see out the remaining minutes, and then added the real sickener by scoring the winner. The goals made it a second 3-2 triumph in as many games for Michael Beale, who watched his players come from behind to beat Hibs by the scoreline, although they got that one done with plenty of time left on the clock. Jim Goodwin had come in for criticism after setting up an ultra defensive side in the weekend clash with Celtic. Aberdeen’s resistance was broken by a late Callum Mcgregor strike.

And there was late heartbreak again as Rangers pulled off a smash and grab to leave the Premiership’s third place team pointless over 180 minutes plus. Sutton though, acknowledged that Goodwin was very close to getting it spot on.

“The ends justify the means,” he told Scottish Football Extra. Had they hung on for a point against Celtic, we’d all be saying it was a Jim Goodwin masterclass. They didn’t do it.

“He’ll have set his Aberdeen team up against Rangers thinking he could maybe get at them. Agan, it didn’t work.

“It was such a poor last goal Aberdeen conceded. Had he hung on for a point I think he’d have been pretty happy with that. I think Rangers did deserve something out of the game.

“With Aberdeen sitting in third place and all things being equal, Jim would’ve taken that. But a couple of really sore ones.

“The added time was seven minutes, or a little over seven. I don’t know.

“They normally play until Rangers get the goal upo in Scotland, don’t they?”

But McCoist was quick as a flash with his response: “To be brutally honest, I've seen your lot score the following day. Honest to God.”
