Ally McCoist ‘so pleased’ for Newcastle United supporters and offers DJ Shack birthday invitation

Former Rangers and Sunderland striker Ally McCoist is ecstatic for Newcastle United supporters after the Carabao Cup victory.

The former Black Cat was on commentary duties as the Magpies brushed aside Southampton to book their place at the Wembley final. A date with destiny awaits on February 26 as Newcastle aim to end their 68-year domestic trophy curse.

Reaching the latter stages of a competition is a rarity for Newcastle fans in recent times. Mike Ashley’s ownership treated cups as an afterthought, with staying in the Premier League the number one priority.

Europa League quarter-final elimination to Benfica and three League Cup exits at the same stage is as good as Toon fans experienced during the Sports Direct tycoon’s 14-year reign of neglect. But supporters are finally dreaming again after the 3-1 aggregate victory at St James’ Park.

Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist expressed his joy for Newcastle supporters after enduring years of failure. He said: “It (the match) was great. I’ve got to say, I’m so pleased. I’m just so pleased for those fans who have stuck by that team and their club when they have been at their wit’s end. Not enjoying their football and what is going on at the club. They stuck by it. And boy, are they getting the benefits now.”

The 60-year-old also joked about hiring North Shields native Shack for his next birthday party. Clips went viral of the Geordie DJ after a post-match set outside St James Metro station in November attracted hundreds of jubilant fans.

Recognising the popularity, Newcastle’s owners invited Shack to perform ahead of the Southampton clash - and McCoist was impressed. He added: “He (Shack) was brilliant. I’ve written his name down. I’m getting him for my next birthday party, he was different class! He would fill the village hall for my birthday. I’m going to write to him.

“Me and Ian Crocker (Sky commentator) were tapping our feet to DJ Shack. As if it could not get anymore atmospheric, they started playing AC/DC. It was brilliant!”
