Ally McCoist turned the tables on talkSPORT sparring partner Alan Brazil after being teased about the prospect of Rangers becoming the worst ever team in Champions League group stage history by the Celtic-daft breakfast show presenter.
A 1-0 defeat to Ajax in their final Group A fixture at Ibrox next week would see Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men finish with six defeats out of six and a goal difference of minus 19 - equalling the unwanted record set by Dinamo Zagreb a decade ago.
Although they could be spared this season by Viktoria Plzen who face Barcelona in their final game and the Czech side have a goal difference of -17 - so there is plenty at stake for Gers ahead of their meeting with the Dutch giants. However, despite a wretched campaign and the prospect of that ‘worst ever’ tag, Rangers could actually still finish third and drop into the Europa League. That would require the Light Blues to better their 4-0 defeat to Ajax in Amsterdam on matchday one and is extremely unlikely.
But it didn’t stop McCoist using that fact to get back at Brazil who was noising up his pal about Gers’ woeful run after Celtic, despite picking up two points in Group F, crashed out of Europe altogether just 24 hours before Rangers’ 3-0 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday.
Brazil said: “The Gers host Ajax on Tuesday knowing that defeat would leave their imprint in this competition as the team with the worst ever group stage performance - Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12 finished with a goal difference of minus 19. Rangers have lost five out of five and conceded 18 more than they have scored. Ally… what do you think of those stats.”
McCoist said: “That’s poor but the one thing I would say is we still have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League. You are out. Out of Europe. We’ve lasted a week longer than you.”
Earlier on the show, McCoist had bemoaned the fact big guns such as Barcelona and Juventus have parachuted into UEFA’s second tier competition and into the Europa League. And Brazil said: “Hold on a minute and let me rewind you about 17 minutes when you said ‘What a joke, Barcelona, Juventus and them out of the Champions League they should not be allowed in the Europa League.' But Rangers are allowed? Is that right? How does that work?”
McCoist said: “No, but I’ll take it. How long have you worked with me and know I’m a hypocrite? You should know by now.”
