Ally McCoist addresses Allan McGregor and Andy Goram Rangers comparison question

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Allan McGregor

ALLY MCCOIST insists it is unfair to compare Allan McGregor with Ibrox legend Andy Goram as he seemingly prepares to call time on his Rangers career.

The 40-year-old was given a run-out in the closing minutes of the Scottish Cup win over Hearts on Saturday as he replaced Jon McLaughlin between the sticks.

McGregor has refused to confirm his long-term plans but the move from boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was seen as a farewell gesture amid suggestions the keeper will retire this summer.

Supporters have often contrasted the careers of McGregor and nine-in-a-row hero Goram and both can rightly stake their claim for the tag of Rangers' finest-ever shot-stopper.

But McCoist will just look back fondly on McGregor's remarkable career if this season does indeed prove to be his Ibrox swansong.

McCoist said: “Phenomenal. Rangers have had some unbelievable goalkeepers in the past, particularly over the last 30, 40 years.

“You go back through them and there is Woods, Goram, Klos and now McGregor, who is up there with all of them.

“I get asked all the time who’s the best - Goram or McGregor? But it’s the most unfair question of all time.

"I played with Goram, who was fantastic, but McGregor is out of this world. He really is.

“He made a couple of errors earlier in the season when he was up at Ross County and everybody automatically puts it down to age.

“But that’s wrong because goalkeepers at 17 make the same mistakes that keepers at 37 make.

“So I don’t think it was anything to do with age. It was just one of those games he had.

“His performances and contribution to the club over these last few years has been unbelievable."
