Allan McGregor's Rangers last dance conundrum as Kris Boyd raises transfer dilemma

Kris Boyd insists Allan McGregor will find it hard to walk away from Rangers after playing the majority of their games last season.

But the ‘keeper’s former Ibrox teammate believes his old pal would find it hard to play second fiddle if he does decide to put the gloves on for one last season.

McGregor is out of contract this summer and despite being linked with a mega money move to the Middle East, it’s understood that such a switch doesn't interest the veteran.

Jon McLaughlin has proved a more than able understudy, but faces a waiting game to find out if he’ll start the season as Rangers’ number one.

And Boyd has doubts over his ability to fill that role over the course of a full season, suggesting the Gers will need another goalie if McGregor does decide to call it quits.

“Jon McLaughlin has shown that he can step in,” he told Sky Sports. “Whether he’s ready to go and play a full season for Rangers is a different story and remains to be seen if he's given the opportunity.

“”I would imagine if Allan McGregor doesn't sign a new contract, then Rangers will bring in another goalkeeper. The question is are you bringing in a goalkeeper that’s going to be second choice to Jon McLaughlin or someone that’s going to be first choice? That’s the decision Rangers will have to make.

“On Allan McGregor, I don’t know. I said a few months ago this would probably be his last season. But the way the season finished for him, he probably wants more of it.

“It remains to be seen what will happen with Allan and it's a difficult one. When you come to the end of your career, you might only play a handful of games and all of a sudden, you maybe feel your rime is up.

“But Allan played the majority of the games last season and it’s very difficult to walk away from playing 40-odd games a season. The fitness levels are there and he’s shown he can do it. He played in the Europa League final, he won the Scottish Cup and pushed Celtic all the way in the league so he’s had a big part in the season.

“Only Allan will decide and from a Rangers point of view, you;ve got to respect that as well because he's done a lot for the football club, but I can understand that Rangers wll want to know exactly what’s happening soon.”

As for whether Boyd believes McGregor deserves a new deal, Boyd was happy to leave that call to the Ibrox decision makers.

“I don’t need to stand here and say Allan McGregor deserves a new deal or he doesn't. The Rangers management will decide and Allan will decide if his body can go again.

“He played a lot of games last year and in the coming days or weeks, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

“If he doesn’t sign, then Rangers will have to get another goalkeeper.”
