The upcoming English Football League weekend schedule has been postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
It was confirmed on Thursday evening that the Queen had passed away at her Balmoral residence aged 96. European football matches taking place last night went ahead as originally scheduled, with several tributes being paid to the monarch.
Players wore black armbands while a minute's silence was observed as Manchester United faced Real Sociedad in the Europa League at Old Trafford while West Ham United faced FCSB at the London Stadium in the Europa Conference League. However, on Thursday night, the EFL confirmed that Friday's fixtures - Burnley v Norwich City in the Championship and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County in League Two - had been postponed. It was stated that the league's governing body would make a decision on the status of the remainder of the weekend's fixture schedule on Friday morning following a review of the official mourning guidance in addition to further consultation with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and other sports.
And it has been confirmed that no EFL matches will take place this weekend. Swansea City head coach Russell Martin was due to hold a press conference at the club's Fairwood training complex at 8:30am on Friday, although the media briefing was cancelled late on Thursday night as a mark of respect to the Queen.
A statement read: "Following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, tomorrow’s scheduled pre-match press conference has been cancelled."
They were due to face Birmingham City at St Andrew's on Saturday afternoon, although the fixture will now be rescheduled for a later date. The same applies to Cardiff City who were set to host Hull City in the Welsh capital this weekend while Newport County were due to travel to Swindon Town in League Two.
An EFL statement read: "Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
"This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.
"Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.
"Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course."
Swansea are scheduled to face Sheffield United on Tuesday, while Cardiff travel to Middlesbrough on the same night. Kick-off in both of those matches is at 7:45pm.
