All the travel checks you need to do 24 hours before flight from Edinburgh Airport

As the summer holidays move ever closer, many eager jet-setters are naturally nervous as airlines and airports witness a surge of customers.

Edinburgh Airport has started issuing live updates on their social media to give an accurate time of how long the security wait time is after customers were met with queues snaking through the terminal building.

They also provide a tracker on their website that gives a wait time, however the airport states that it measures the queue time inside the security hall once passengers have passed through the e-gate.

As well as long queues, flight cancellations are throwing holidays into chaos with some flights being axed last minute around the UK, with some people already in the airport when they got the notification.

On top of checking you have the correct documentation and your passport is valid, you also need to double check the Covid rules for the country of your destination.

As Covid rules can change quickly, on the run up to your holiday, make sure you have filled out any forms if you need to and organised Covid tests or downloaded your Covid pass, if required.

What you should do before you travel

48-hours before you travel

Two days before travelling, double check if you will need to wear a face mask on the plane or in the country you are visiting.

Keep an eye on your email inbox and spam folder so that if your flight is cancelled, you will see the notification from your airline.

If your flight is cancelled, your airline should get in contact by text or email.

24-hours before you travel

Keep tabs on the social media channels of your airline you're flying with, as well as the airport.

This may give you a heads up if your flight is delayed, cancelled or if you should expect long wait times in the airport.

Also note your airport of destination - UK holidaymakers have been held up in long lines at passport control, so make sure you're aware of what to expect.

On the day of your travel

On the day of your departure, check the status of your flight before you leave for the airport.

You can check your flight status with Edinburgh Airport's live flight tracker, where you see all their arrivals and departures for that day.

You can also see your flight status with your airline, whether it's Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways or TUI. You can read more about that here.
