After months of angry strikes across the UK, 2023 looks set to be braced for further industrial action as NHS workers, rail workers and highways workers announce strike dates and postal workers ballot for action. Despite a number of bitter industrial action in December, a lack of resolution means January will see more of the same.
Here is the list of strikes for January 2023.
National Highways
National Highways workers are set to walk out nationwide on January 3 and 4 as they continue to strike for a better pay offer from employers.
Trains
There are two sets of national strike action due to be taken by RMT workers in January. Workers will be walking out across the country on January 3, 4, 6, and 7.
The train drivers union Aslef which represents workers across 15 rail companies will also stage a fresh strike on January 5 in a long-running row over pay.
NHS
Ministers have the power to stop strikes but have not opened negotiations on NHS pay. Now, more hospitals in England will see strike action.
Nurses
- The Royal College of Nurses (RCN) will be striking 18 and 19 January after previously striking on 15 and 20 December
- The union wants a rise of 19% pay rise instead of the 4.75% awarded.
- The RCN in Scotland says it will announce strike dates for early 2023
Ambulance Workers
Unison Union ambulance workers are set to strike on January 11 and 23. Services in the North West, North East, London, Yorkshire and South West will take action over pay and staffing.
- The strikes will affect non-life threatening calls only
- The unions have asked for above-inflation pay rises
- The governments in England and Wales have given NHS staff an average rise of 4.75%
Postal workers
Andy Furey, acting deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), has said his organisation’s row with Royal Mail is not resolved and there are plans in place to ballot members well into the new year on the prospect of new strikes.
