Drivers are being urged to familiarise themselves with pavement parking regulations to avoid getting fined and to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Pavement parking is currently legal everywhere in the UK except London, but it may be subject to change, as cars blocking pathways can cause serious problems for pedestrians - especially the elderly, disabled people and those using prams or pushchairs.
New parking laws are currently being considered, including a widespread ban on pavement parking in the UK, with fines reaching £70. Back in 2020 it was announced that tougher fines could be introduced for motorists who park on pavements under new powers for councils in Wales.
A survey conducted at the time found that 83% of people in Wales viewed it as a real problem and, at the time, the Welsh Government said it would give local authorities the power to fine people parking on pavements. Research from charity, Guide Dogs, found that 32% of people with visual impairments and 48% of wheelchair users were less keen to go out on their own because of anti-social pavement parking.
