The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer crammed in a whole host of familiar faces, Marvel villains, and fresh comic book characters that you might not be familiar with.
From one-second glimpses to full-on showdowns, we've pored over every frame in the first trailer to break down everything you may have missed, including the obscure bad guys Tom Holland's Spidey will be throwing down with – as well as speculation on those who still have an air of mystery surrounding them.
So, join us as we swing into the tangled web that Marvel and Sony are weaving for Spider-Man: Brand New Day – including all the new characters introduced in the trailer.
The Hand
If you need ninjas in the Marvel universe, you go to The Hand. The claret-covered cult have long been at odds with Daredevil but, here, it appears they're on Spider-Man's radar.
They have previously appeared in the MCU in Netflix's Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, where they were headed up by Sigourney Weaver's Alexandra Reid.
Boomerang
First debuting in Marvel Comics in 1966, Boomerang – also known as Fred Myers – has been a low-key thorn in Spidey's side for decades.
Perhaps best known for his boomerang-shaped weapons and throwing prowess, the character has also previously faced off against Hulk. Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is confirmed to make an appearance, but will we see the Jade Giant come out to play as New York gets a new wave of villains?
Tarantula
Joining Boomerang in the (sorry) C-list tier of Spider-Man villains is Tarantula, who we think we can see covered in armor plating and crashing into Tom Holland's wallcrawler during one blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.
For those unfamiliar, the Tarantula moniker has been taken on by multiple people, but the first iteration – Anton Miguel Rodriguez – is perhaps the most iconic. He is equipped with powers similar to those of Spider-Man. The shot above is also a recreation of the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #134, which was speculated about after a crew member posted a behind-the-scenes look last year.
Scorpion
Not a new character, with Michael Mando's criminal having appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but this is the first time we see Mac Gargan in a full-on Scorpion suit, complete with a swinging, stinging tail.
In one Brand New Day moment, he appears to get the better of Spider-Man, proving that – despite the fourth Spidey MCU movie being stacked with villains – he might stand out as the webhead's biggest physical threat.
MJ's love interest
Tom Holland's Peter Parker has to sit back while MJ – having had her memories of Peter wiped – finds love with a new man, played by Ahsoka's Eman Esfandi.
Early speculation (and we stress, it is very early days at this point) suggests that it could be Paul, the controversial comic book character who became MJ's boyfriend after Spider-Man found himself trapped in another dimension.
Sadie Sink's character – is it Jean Grey?
We think we see Sadie Sink's unnamed character in Peter Parker's room midway through the Brand New Day trailer with her back to the camera. The fact that her arrival comes not long after the reveal of police officers being under some sort of mind control means that there isn't too much of a leap in guessing she's Jean Grey, the psychic mutant.
But there are other options, including Screwball, the streamer character who popped up in Insomniac's Spider-Man series. There are cameras in that above shot, after all.
Or might she be linked to The Punisher in some way? The jury is out until Marvel and Sony officially weigh in.
Punisher and Bruce Banner
No, these two aren't new – but this is the first time they have entered Spider-Man's orbit in a standalone film. Punisher appears to already have a history with Spidey by the time he runs him down in his truck (as seen in the Brand New Day trailer), while Pete seeks out Bruce after dealing with some gnarly spider-shaped mutations.
Tramell Tillman's character
There's previously been little to no intel on who Tramell Tillman is playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but we do see the trailer subtitles refer to him as 'Bill'. There had been rumors he is playing anti-mutant activist William Metzger. His inflammatory rhetoric in the trailer only adds further fuel to that fire.
Tombstone… and a familiar voice
Tombstone, the mob boss villain played in Brand New Day by Marvin Jones III, is the big figure MIA during the first trailer. While we see nothing of him, we do hear a narrator at the end of the trailer, one that sounds suspiciously like Keith David. What role will he have to play, if any, in proceedings.
