All hail the real game of the show for Xbox: this anime-inspired life sim with some of the best art around

A young boy lays on a grass hill reaching up at dragonflies.

The Xbox Showcase had a lot of big announcements. Gears of War: E-Day has a release date, console exclusivity is back, Persona 6 is real even if it didn't give us much. Though none of those actually matter because I was too busy getting dazzled by life-sim Vivarium.

If you thought you saw a Studio Ghibli movie in the middle of the showcase then you were mistaken, but you do know what game I'm talking about now. First announced in 2023, Vivarium is now set for a 2027 release, as revealed in the latest trailer, and it still looks as gorgeous as ever. The Ghibli vibes are largely owed to the game's lovely art, which the trailer notes is hand-illustrated.

Vivarium follows the story of Jenny, an 11-year-old that lives within a terrarium. The game takes place in this perfect pocket world, draped in a nostalgic atmosphere of verdant foliage and sunlight. The game's official site hints that while you'll spend most of your time doing the expected cozy activities of a life-sim, there is a hidden truth that lies beneath.

A fun twist on the life-sim formula that Vivarium brings is its approach to days. According to the game's official site, "days in Vivarium are synced to the player's real-world calendar." This will allow for new unique discoveries. Some of the cozy tasks you'll be able to get up to include cooking, collecting vinyl records, and crafting items to decorate your home. If you've ever wanted to live inside of a Ghibli film, Vivarium is a game that should be on your radar.

Vivarium is set to release in 2027 for Xbox Series consoles and PC.

My favorite indie game of 2024, a perfect mashup of Sailor Moon and Stardew Valley, just got a massive new update adding romance – and I already know who I’m dating
