All Championship boss changes ranked from Forest transformation to West Brom slump

For the third season running the Championship has seen the number of managerial changes reach double figures.

It is a division full of tension and as such, many owners tend to get twitchy and pull the trigger. The first to do so this season was Nottingham Forest, who relieved Chris Hughton of his duties after just seven games in September.

Another nine managers have either been given the axe, left by mutual consent or resigned, as was the case with the latest casualty when Darren Ferguson quit Peterborough last month. Here, we assess all ten changes so far and rank them from most effective to least.

Steve Cooper (Nottingham Forest) - 5/5

Cooper arrived at the City Ground with Forest rock-bottom of the Championship.

Confidence was lower than a snake's belly after rotten form under Chris Hughton. But what has since took place is a remarkable transformation. Forest are now playing vibrant, easy-on-the-eye football and Cooper has them on the fringes of the play-offs.

Their exploits in the FA Cup saw them pull off superb victories over Arsenal and Leicester before running Liverpool mightily close in last week's quarter-final. Cooper has taken to Forest, and the fans have embraced him. It looks a perfect match.

Chris Wilder (Middlesbrough) - 4.5/5

Wilder has had almost as transformative an effect on Boro as Cooper has on Forest. Admittedly, Boro were 14th when the former Sheffield United boss was appointed. But he has made them into a solid outfit, particularly strong at home.

Also like Forest, Wilder's men caught the eye in the FA Cup knocking out Manchester United and Tottenham before succumbing to Chelsea in the last-eight. If Boro don't go up this season, expect them to be strong contenders next year.

Paul Heckingbottom (Sheffield United) - 4/5

Heckingbottom had a trial run of the Blades job following Wilder's exit last season in their awful second Premier League campaign. The brief reign of Slavisa Jokanovic didn't work out and clearly United had a strategy in mind. Heckingbottom was promoted from his role as under-23s boss and former Blades' favourites Stuart McCall and Jack Lester were both drafted in as first team coaches.

He's cajoled United into more consistent form and they have, at times, shown glimpses of the side that got promoted out of this division three seasons ago. Now fifth, they'll not be ruling out a late charge for the second automatic spot.

Steve Morison ( Cardiff ) - 3/5

Back in October, Mick McCarthy left Cardiff after a horror run of eight straight defeats - the worst run in the club's history. Many expected the Bluebirds to go for experience with the team just a point above safety, but they surprisingly gave Steve Morison the nod.

Previously City's under-23s boss, Morison has done a solid job of keeping Cardiff's heads above the relegation zone. As it stands they are 17th and are already planning for next season, with Morison given a contract extension to cover the 2022-23 campaign.

Ryan Lowe (Preston) - 3/5

Eyebrows were raised in December when Lowe walked out on League One side Plymouth to take up the vacancy at North End. Argyle were flying high in the third tier whilst Preston were 18th in the Championship.

Form under Lowe has been steady if not spectacular. Whilst they won't be dragged into a dogfight, they sit 10 points off the play-offs and that looks beyond them. Lowe will already be looking towards next season, despite eight games still remaining.

Shota Arveladze (Hull) - 2.5/5

Four of the bottom five in the Championship have made changes in the dugout over the course of the season, with Hull bringing in Arveladze shortly after the takeover of City by Turkish TV personality Acun Ilicali.

The Georgian has won just three of his 12 matches in charge but the buffer between the Tigers and the bottom three is still a healthy 13 points. Survival, in their first season back, is the main priority for Hull and Arveladze looks set to deliver that.

Grant McCann (Peterborough) - 2/5

McCann swapped one side struggling at the bottom for another, when he re-joined former club Peterborough less than a month after leaving East Yorkshire. Three defeats kicked off his reign but Posh have taken five points from the last four games.

The 3-1 win at QPR last time out that made people sit up and notice. They are still seven points adrift of safety and it looks like McCann and his new employers have left it too late.

Paul Ince (Reading) - 2/5

Arguably the most left-field appointment on this list, former England captain Ince returned to the dugout after an eight-year absence.

He took over a Royals' side that was low on morale and that had recently been on an awful winless run. But Ince has masterminded wins over Birmingham and Blackburn that ensured the side were five points above the drop zone heading into the international break.

Whilst Reading staying in the division won't go down as a famous survival mission, Ince will surely have enough credit in the bank to potentially get more long-term offers in the summer.

Poya Asbaghi (Barnsley) - 1.5/5

Relative unknown Asbaghi was hired by Barnsley in November after a wretched start to the season. He took over a Reds side low on morale and it took a whopping three months for the 36-year-old to seal his first win.

Since then, they've strung together four wins in nine to give themselves a fighting chance of staying up. Next week's home game with Reading is one to be filed under 'six-pointer'.

Steve Bruce (West Bromwich) - 1/5

When Bruce arrived, Albion were fifth in the standings. Many assumed he would produce the golden touch having sealed four promotions to the top flight in his long career in the dugout.

But things haven't clicked into place at the Hawthorns. He lost four of his first five games and despite form improving of late he's still only picked up two wins in nine games.

Despite there being eight games left, it looks a tall order for the Baggies to overtake so many sides in the fight for a top-six spot. Bruce is contracted for next season and Albion fans will demand a vast improvement if he's still in situ.
