Both of the candidates running in the November 8, 2022, general election for Indiana State Senate District 46 — Andrea Hunley (D) and Evan Shearin (R) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.
Eighty-eight of the country’s 99 state legislative chambers will hold regularly scheduled elections in 2022. The Republican Party controls both chambers of Indiana’s state legislature. Indiana is one of 23 states with a Republican trifecta government.
Here are excerpts from candidates’ responses to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Hunley:
“I believe education and a joy for learning are at the center of connected, strong communities. As a teacher and principal, I know how critical quality education is to students, families, and neighborhoods. Every child deserves a seat at a high-quality school – one where outcomes cannot be predicted by race or zip code, where teachers reflect the student body, and where connections are made to meet the full needs of each family.”
Shearin:
“Infrastructure and Crime reduction are vital to Indianapolis and our state right now. But homelessness is also close to my heart. Also, I predict that energy prices will continue to increase this year, and the state of Indiana must be prepared to help low-income Hoosiers especially pay their power and heating bills.”
