Alistair Johnston to Celtic transfer hint dropped by Canada boss as path to Parkhead cleared after World Cup exit

Canada boss John Herdman has dropped the latest clue that Alistair Johnston is imminently set to move to Celtic following their World Cup exit.

The Canada right-back has been earning rave reviews for his country despite The Maple Leafs rounding off their group stage campaign with defeat to Morocco and failing to claim a single point during their first trip to the tournament since 1986. However, Ange Postecoglou got in before his World Cup performances could attract the other suitors and Record Sport understands that is worth a fee in the region of £3million has been agreed with CF Montreal.

Johnston has all-but admitted a move is close with his Montreal teammate Victor Wanyama working behind the scenes to convince him of the switch. Now his international boss has offered a fresh clue that a deal is set to get over the line when Johnston returns from the Middle East.

Speaking to TSN Sports after the full-time whistle, Herdman was asked about the right-back's future amid Celtic 's interest and if he expected any of his squad to move to Europe after Qatar 2022. He responded: “Alistair’s career is going to be on a real positive trajectory. I think Ali is just one of the many who are going to benefit from performances in this World Cup.”

Johnston featured in all three of Canada's World Cup group stage showdowns, and is viewed as a potential replacement for Josip Juranovic. The Croat's contract talks at Celtic have stalled and a January sale is on the cards.
