Alisson has made Liverpool problem clear all season as Arthur Melo could get unlikely chance

You're safe from the possibility of matchday disappointment this weekend, so here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Friday, March 17.

Alisson has been openly telling Liverpool what their problem is all season

While Liverpool have floundered around aimlessly in the dark for much of a tortuous campaign, there has been one consistent chink of light to which the rest of the team would be wise to follow.

So Alisson Becker is perhaps better placed than most to pass verdict on a season that, while still more than two months from its conclusion, is already guaranteed to have significant ramifications for the future.

And the goalkeeper hit the nail on the head when asked to assess the Reds' Champions League round of 16 elimination at Real Madrid on Wednesday, when any hope of a stirring comeback was dashed by a subdued and increasingly disinterested performance from Jurgen Klopp's side.

“We had a fantastic, incredible game against Manchester United," said the goalkeeper. "Soon after, an inexplicable game against Bournemouth. Arthur Melo has just been given an unlikely chance to rescue his Liverpool career

For all their injury woes this season, Liverpool still actually boast plenty of bodies in midfield.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, James Milner, and Harvey Elliott have all comfortably made more than 20 appearances so far this term, while Stefan Bajcetic was one outing off such a landmark in his breakthrough campaign before an untimely stress adductor injury ruled him out until the summer. Beyond that, Jurgen Klopp can call upon Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, and Arthur Melo.

And that’s without considering the fact that Cody Gakpo, Roberto Firmino, and Fabio Carvalho can and have been used in deeper roles on occasions, while youngster Bobby Clark has impressed in cameos when stepping up from the Academy.

Quantity isn’t the problem at Anfield, rather it’s quality. With a midfield revamp pencilled in for the summer, the Reds will look to address such issues at the end of the season. But that doesn’t help them now with their hopes of Champions League qualification on the line.

Now out of all three cup competitions, after their Champions League exit to Real Madrid, they are down in sixth in the Premier League table and sit six points off the top four. Not in action this weekend, they could drop to seventh and see that deficit extended to nine points.
