Alison Hammond surprised by Amanda Holden's 'harsh' BGT comments to 'poor' semi-finalist

Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary were surprised by Amanda Holden’s “negative” comments to Britain’s Got Talent finalist on Tuesday evening after a death-defying stunt.

The This Morning hosts sat down with Josie Gibson on Wednesday morning to chat over the talent show drama from the night before and highlighted the judge’s comments to Andrew Basso.

The Harry Houdini-style escape artist act disappeared from view during his stunt in the semi-final, submerging himself in a tank of water during his act for several minutes.

During a crucial moment of the contestant’s act, the set went dark and he could no longer be seen.

After he emerged from the tank and had successfully completed his act unharmed, Amanda stunned fans when she accused the semi-final act of 'deceit'.

Amanda, who said she was 'disappointed,' by the performance, said: "This evening, because of the darkness, we were left wondering if there was less danger and more deceit going on."

In the This Morning studio, Josie said she agreed with the judge’s comments, saying: “Everybody was on the edge of their seat when they watched him the first time around.

“Unfortunately, this time around was a little different. You always watch these things because you think something might go wrong, but this time you couldn't see anything.”

Dermot pushed back, saying: “He went in with loads of handcuffs and came out without them, so he obviously did it.”

Alison seemed surprised by the comments, saying: “She’s not normally like that, is she? Amanda doesn’t normally give negativity. What was it all about?”

After the This Morning studio played the BGT clip, Dermot said of Andew Basso: “Poor guy, literally shackles behind him, soaking wet and you’re disappointed.”

Alison added: “He was out of breath, poor thing, imagine that.”

But Josie was adamant that Amanda had made the right call, saying: “It was a bit like turning your TV off and turning it back on and going, ‘Surprise!’.”

Several fans agreed with Amanda and flocked to Twitter to comment on Tuesday evening, with one writing: “Wait what!!!! The lights went out in the cage. That's convenient.”

A second added: "So we don't actually get to see what he is doing in there,” as a third chimed in: "What is happening."

Later in the show during the dramatic closing moments, Andrew learned he had got the boot and did not manage to make it through to the final.

Britain’s Got Talent continues this evening on ITV.
