Alison Hammond 'back and forth' to hospital as family member suffers health battle

Alison Hammond said she has been in and out of hospital to visit her niece as the This Morning host praised the work of the NHS.

The 48-year-old hosted the ITV daytime show alongside Dermot O’Leary on Friday to discuss the day’s news with Carol Vorderman and Nick Ferrari.

The hosts discussed a new survey revealing one in three NHS staff would be unhappy to have their relatives treated in the hospital where they work, which Alison labelled ‘really worrying’.

Carol admitted she was ‘really shocked’ by the findings, as she said: “I think they’re very tired.

“These people have been through a trauma and then we’ve had the strikes. They’re exhausted. They’re on their knees.

“They were saying that for a lot of them, the system and the tiredness is preventing them from doing their job properly.

“So the question, can we trust the NHS to give decent care? I think it’s for those people to give the answer rather than me.

“They’re worn down. The system is worn down. That’s from successive governments but particularly in a pandemic. I don’t really know where we go from here, to be honest.”

Alison then said she wanted to add a ‘caveat’ to the discussion about her own personal experience with the NHS of late.

“I definitely need to say, my niece is in hospital right now. I've been going back and forward.

“She's doing really well, by the way, but the NHS staff have been absolutely amazing. So, yes this story is worrying, but she has been treated amazingly.”

Radio presenter Nick had a similar story, as he said he had been visiting his partner’s son in hospital at Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading for over two week, following an ‘horrific’ rugby injury.

He said: “I’m telling you now it was absolutely exemplary. They were absolutely fantastic. I saw them. They are working a hell of a shift. What I saw you could not improve.”

The survey showed that 62.9 percent of 636,000 workers polled said that if a friend or relative needed treatment, they would be happy with the standard provided.

636,348 NHS employees in England responded to the NHS Staff Survey 2022, carried out between September and December last year.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
