Switzerland’s Alinghi Red Bull Racing faced setbacks in the America’s Cup races on Sunday, as a mainsail issue prevented them from starting one of their races, resulting in a disqualification. This unfortunate incident has put their chances of advancing in the competition at risk.
Despite their efforts, the crew was unable to rectify the problem in time for the race against Emirates Team New Zealand. Subsequently, Alinghi suffered another defeat in the second race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, bringing their record to 0-4 at the midway point of the round robin.
Alinghi skipper expressed the team's urgency to secure victories, stating, 'We know we need to put points on the board and to do that we need to win races. Every day we are just going to try again and again and try to fix what we are missing so far. It’s now or never, and so we are looking forward to Tuesday to go out there and do some good races.'
In the initial stage of the competition, each team races against the others twice, with a point awarded to the winner of each race. The five challengers to New Zealand will eventually be narrowed down to four for the semifinals.
Another team facing challenges is Orient Express Racing Team, which holds a 1-3 record after losing to INEOS Britannia on Sunday, just ahead of Alinghi in the standings.
The races are set to resume on Tuesday, providing Alinghi and other teams with an opportunity to regroup and strive for better results in the upcoming matches.
