Alexis Sanchez in line for unexpected role in Liverpool Champions League clash

Alexis Sanchez could make a surprise start against Liverpool in their Champions League showdown.

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi confirmed he is ready to make changes and could use former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Sanchez in attack.

Sanchez, 33, has started just five Series A games this season but his rival Lautaro Martinez has not scored in six games and Inter’s form has stuttered after just one point from two games against AC Milan and Napoli.

Inzaghi, who is set to start either Sanchez or Martinez alongside ex-Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko, said: “All the strikers have the same chances to start.

“We’ve played many games recently. One striker will be introduced as a sub. I always try to rotate them. It’s hard to recover when you play every three days.”

Inzaghi claimed Liverpool will start as favourites to reach the quarter finals and warned his players they will have to play the perfect game to go through.

Inzaghi said: “They have amazing players, they have an excellent coach and we will have to be at our best and on guard because they are deadly on the break and we cannot make any mistakes.

“But if we play our game and are at our best then we can be confident. On paper, Liverpool are the favourite, but games must be played.

“Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe, but our lads deserve to play these kinds of games. We haven’t played in the Round of 16 for many years and although it will be very difficult, we’ll try to make it.”

Inter won the Series A title last season and their Turkey international Hakan Calhanoglu believes more trophies can follow.

Calhanoglu said: “I’ve already won a trophy in six months, I want to win the Coppa Italia as well and the Champions League is a dream. We must be united and prove our worth tomorrow. If we play as we know, we can do well.”
