Alexia Putellas leaving Barcelona after 14 years and set for WSL’s biggest transfer

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas lifted the club’s fourth Women’s Champions League title against Lyon on Saturday - (Reuters)

Alexia Putellas has announced that she will be leaving Barcelona after 14 years at the Catalan club.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner lifted her fourth Champions League title with the club on Saturday with victory against Lyon.

The Spain international, 32, won 38 trophies with Barcelona in a dominant spell and scored a record 232 goals for the women’s team.

Putellas has been strongly linked with a move to Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses, and she was seen visiting the club’s stadium for a league game earlier this season.

It would represent the biggest transfer in WSL history and a further statement from ambitious club owner Michele Kang, who also owns Champions League runners-up Lyon and the Washington Spirit.

The London City Lionesses finished sixth in the WSL last season, in their first top-flight campaign, and are set on closing the gap to Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Putellas will make her 508th and final appearance for Barcelona on Wednesday against Real Sociedad. She is second on the all-time appearance list.
