Alexandre Lacazette to remain Arsenal captain for rest of the season, Mikel Arteta confirms

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Alexandre Lacazette will captain the club until the end of the season.

Arteta stripped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy over a disciplinary breach towards the end of last year and eventually allowed the striker to leave the club on transfer deadline day as he joined Barcelona as a free agent after terminating his contract.

Lacazette has become a fixture in the Arteta’s side since Aubameyang’s exile began and has worn the armband as the senior figure in a leadership group that also includes Granit Xhaka – himself a former club captain – and centre-back Rob Holding.

Arteta has delayed naming a permanent successor to Aubameyang and with Lacazette due to be out of contract at the end of the season, it appears the Spaniard is happy to wait until the summer until making a longer-term appointment.

Left-back Kieran Tierney and midfielder Martin Odegaard, who captains the Norwegian national team, have both been touted as possible options, while the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White will have spent a full season at the club by then.
