Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Milner - Liverpool injury round-up and expected return dates

Liverpool ’s season continues to run on all fronts as they closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to just one point with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday, while they now head to Nottingham Forest for an FA Cup quarter-final match on Sunday.

The Reds came away unscathed from their midweek win against the Gunners, although Jurgen Klopp was left without two of his first team players for that game, but there are doubts over four players ahead of this weekend.

Here is all you need to know about the current state of play at Anfield and the expected return dates for those on the sidelines ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out for at least a month after picking up a hamstring injury following the 2-0 defeat of Arsenal on Wednesday, with the defender playing the full 90 minutes of the contest.

However, Klopp revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that the young right-back has picked up a long term injury and will therefore be unavailable for the trip to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday.

On Friday, Klopp said: "Trent is out with a hamstring. He cannot be part of England as well. No good news, we will see how long that takes."

Mohamed Salah

Is this Liverpool's strongest ever squad under Jurgen Klopp? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was included in the squad to face Arsenal on Wednesday after initially picking up a foot problem which limited him to a place on the bench in the 2-0 victory.

He did end up featuring as a 65th minute substitute in that game but according to Klopp, he once again felt a problem in his foot following the match and could now be a doubt for Sunday's trip to Nottingham Forest.

On Friday, Klopp said: "Mo felt his foot again a little bit after the game, so we have to see what we do with that."

James Milner

Midfield veteran James Milner was left out of the Liverpool squad for their victory over Arsenal on Wednesday after falling ill ahead of the game, with it being revealed that he had come down with a virus.

It has not been confirmed as Covid, which would mean that Milner can return to action as soon as he feels better and is fit to do so, although it remains to be seen as to whether that will be this weekend.

The 36-year-old is not a huge miss due to Liverpool’s incredible midfield depth and the fact he isn’t a regular starter, but he still remains an important figure in the squad due to his vast experience and versatility.

Kostas Tsimikas

Defender Kostas Tsimikas has also fallen ill after picking up a virus and was the second player to be left out of Liverpool’s squad for Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Like Milner, it hasn’t been confirmed that Tsimikas has Covid-19, and therefore it provides some encouragement over the fact that he could be available once again this weekend, although he will continue to be assessed and a late decision may be made.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, journalist Carl Markham confirmed that Milner and Tsimikas have been ruled out of tonight’s clash in north London, by tweeting: “Klopp says Konate is back fit. Milner and Tsimikas are out with illness.”
