An ally of former First Minister Alex Salmond has accepted a job with a defeated candidate in the SNP leadership contest
Kirk Torrance will be on the public payroll as a “senior policy advisor” for Ash Regan.
Torrance was a key figure in transforming the SNP’s online and digital offering when Salmond was party leader.
But he joined Alba after Salmond’s bitter falling out with Nicola Sturgeon over her government’s unlawful probe into sexual harassment allegations against the former FM.
Torrance later became an Alba candidate and had an influential role in Regan’s leadership campaign this year.
He will now be joining her MSP team.
Torrance, who is no longer an Alba member, said: “Collaborating with Ash Regan on her leadership campaign was an inspiring experience, and I'm eager to continue advising her in this new capacity.
"My primary focus is to support Ms Regan in her role as an MSP for Edinburgh Eastern, helping her to effectively represent the interests of her constituents and drive positive change.”
Regan said: “I'm thrilled to have Kirk Torrance join our team as a senior policy advisor. His invaluable advice during my SNP leadership campaign showcased his expertise and in-depth understanding of the party's history and core values.
“Kirk's role in our team is to support my work as an elected member for Edinburgh Eastern, ensuring that we effectively address the needs of the constituency while also promoting unity within the SNP group and working tirelessly to create a brighter future for Scotland.”
Senior figures in the SNP are unlikely to view the appointment with enthusiasm as they believe Alba is trying to destroy their party.
Regan, who came third in the contest after Kate Forbes and Humza Yousaf, attracted attention during the campaign after airing the idea of constructing a large independence ‘readiness’ thermometer.
The Scottish Government has confirmed they have no plans to push ahead with the initiative.
