Alex Rae expects Celtic dropped points as he urges Rangers put pedal to the metal in title race

Alex Rae says it's vital Rangers keep on Celtic's tails despite trailing by more than a game in the title race - as the champions will slip up.

The former Ibrox midfielder knows how important today's match with Aberdeen is, with a 1-1 draw at Ibrox against Livingston last weekend leaving his former side four points off Ange Postecoglou's leaders. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's challengers can reduce that gap to a point today ahead of Celtic playing Livingston on Sunday but it will be no easy task amid fan unrest over disappointing performances.

Rangers need to get back on the winning trail and Rae, speaking to Grosvenor Sport, says it's so important with their rivals soon to slip up. He said: "One thing I’ll say is that the title race isn’t over. Four points is not a big gap at this stage in the season but Rangers have obviously got to negotiate past Aberdeen at the weekend and they’re the third-best team in the league right now.

"Jim Goodwin has recruited well in the summer so that game will be massive for them. It’s a huge week for everyone concerned with Rangers Football Club.

"I still maintain that Celtic will drop more points and so Rangers just need to make sure that the gap doesn’t increase."

A calamitous Champions League campaign will see the Light Blues exit Europe altogether while performances domestically have only heightened the importance of today's match with the Dons.
