Rangers B-team boss David McCallum says Wednesday's UEFA Youth League clash with Liverpool will come just too soon for an Alex Lowry comeback. But he's optimistic he'll be back on the pitch imminently as the youngster looks to fight his way back into the first-team picture.
The 19-year-old exploded on to the scene under Gio van Bronckhorst last season but his hopes of building on that were dashed when he was on the receiving end of a horrendous tackle from Dumbarton 's Ally Love in the Challenge Cup. He hasn't kicked a ball since August but he's slowly but surely working back up to match fitness.
There had been hopes Lowry would feature for the B-team on Wednesday when they host Liverpool, the same day the Rangers first-team face the Anfield giants. But while he's not quite there yet, McCallum says he's not far away at all.
He said: "He won't be involved in our game tomorrow, it's slightly too soon for that. There's been talk about looking at the fixtures coming up to see where he might get some opportunities.
"He's back training and he's looking good, but there's a bit of care to be taken to make sure that when he does go back into games, he's able to put himself in that environment full on without any concerns at all, even just in terms of his general fitness. You don't want to put him in that environment without having his fitness levels and endurance levels at a point where he can sustain his performances.
"Hopefully he's not too far away. We're having conversations with the staff to see when he might return."
