Alex Greive opens up on joy of netting late St Mirren winner after plane prep pays off on 'tough' trip home

Alex Greive was watching prep videos for the Livingston game on the dreaded long haul flight back from international duty with New Zealand.

And the nightmare 36-hour trip back from Auckland was quickly forgotten when he slammed home a thrilling late winner on Saturday afternoon to send the St Mirren supporters wild.

The clinical striker admits there was some miscommunication regarding his flight back to Scotland, with his Australian teammates returning much sooner to Paisley than he did last week.

But alongside Aussie Keanu Baccus, the 23-year-old forward made the difference on the scoresheet as the Saints propelled themselves up to the heady heights of third in the Premiership table.

Greive told Renfrewshire Live Sport: "You could tell how much I enjoyed the goal from the way I ran off to celebrate with the fans. I think it's fair to say we have the Buddies onside right now.

"There was a lot of emotion there, scoring right at the end. There were a lot of ups and downs in that second half and it meant a lot to us to get the win.

"It was a long week. I played for New Zealand against Australia in Auckland on Sunday and didn't get back to Paisley until Thursday.

"The journey was a tough one. I had a 19-hour flight from Auckland to Dubai, but it stopped halfway at Kuala Lumpur. Then I had to get from Dubai to London and London to Glasgow.

"I think it was difficult organising flights and stuff. And there was maybe a bit of miscommunication in there as well. But we've talked about it and it's all sorted out.

"It was all worth it in the end. I felt pretty good despite all the travelling and I really wanted to get out there and play. I'm still young and the legs work ok, so I was fine.

"The manager had sent me videos to prep for this game, so I was ready for whatever came along.

"I don't feel too bad - it's easier flying back this way than the other way, plus I'm pretty good at sleeping on a plane. And you definitely feel a whole lot better when you win!"

While Greive refused to discuss the club's specific targets for this season, he did admit the Buddies are in a great spot in the table as they look to finally break into the top half of the table after a very lengthy absence.

Greive added: "We're eight or nine games in now and that's a fair wedge of the season. We know there's a long way to go, but we're feeling good.

"We've kept our goals for the season within the dressing room until now, but if we kick on I think there's no reason why we can't finish in the top half of the league."
