Alejandro Garnacho's World Cup hopes questioned with Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo blamed

Manchester United sensation Alejandro Garnacho has been told that he does not deserve to be named for World Cup duty alongside Lionel Messi due to his bond with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo and Messi are widely regarded as two of the greatest players in history if not THE very best - winning the Ballon d'Or a staggering 12 times between them. Despite being in the twilight of their careers, the two are ready to lead their respective nations - Portugal and Argentina - at the impending Qatar showcase.

Garnacho, 18, has emerged as a late contender for selection, meanwhile, with Roma forward Paulo Dybala rated as an injury doubt for the finals. It comes as Madrid-born Argentine hotshot Garnacho continues to make a big impact in United colours at Old Trafford and beyond.

He came off the bench to provide two assists during the Carabao Cup win against Aston Villa last night. That came seven days after scoring his first goal against Real Sociedad - which prompted a brilliant celebration alongside "idol" Ronaldo, who assisted the strike.

But will he book a wildcard ticket to Qatar? Despite being yet to make his senior debut, the Academy graduate is familiar with the international set-up after being called up to a training squad this year.

Garnacho was subject to intense debate on TyC Sports in Argentina as presenter Ariel Rodriguez suggested that he would be a main contender to replace Dybala should the Roma forward not recover in time. However, pundit Guido Glait made his own bizarre case for the United player to be omitted.

He said: "Please. He has had one-and-a-half games in the first division."

Glait added: "He does not speak [Argentine] Spanish, he does not know dulce de leche, he never used a birome he does not know the 'Caminito' and he does not know the 9th of July.

"And thirdly, the most important thing, he said that his idol is Cristiano Ronaldo. How is he going to say that?

"He didn't understand anything. [Lionel] Messi plays in the Argentine national team."
