Aldi to sell its cheapest advent calendar for just 99p

Aldi’s 99p Kevin the Carrot advent calendar has been given the thumbs up and not just because of the bargain price.

There are more advent calendars out there then you can shake the proverbial stick at, ranging from ones that cost less than a quid to one that will set you back an eye-watering £470 – any Dior lovers out there? Harry Potter and Lego creations are always popular from around £25 to £35, while Lush has one full of bath bombs and stuff for £185.

But for those wanting something cheap and cheerful, they would do well to head to budget supermarket Aldi and grab a Kevin the Carrot alternative. Kirsty Bosley, a reporter for BirminghamLive, did just that and was pleasantly surprised what she got for her small outlay.

“I wanted to check out an advent calendar on the cheaper end of the scale, to see if it’s any good and whether it would still spark Christmas joy,” she said. “And so I popped into Aldi to pick up their 99p Kevin the Carrot calendar.

“It’s very light in weight (just 65g) and it feels a bit flimsy. But it’s very cute, showing Kevin and his family outside a big Home Alone-style mansion house.

“Kevin is holding his face like Macaulay Culkin and one of the kids has a letterman jacket on like he’s Buzz McCallister. As a huge Home Alone fan, I love it.”

She continued: “There are 24 doors, with the Christmas Eve door double the size of the others. I crack into door number one, even though it felt like bad luck in the middle of November.

“There’s no foil covering the chocolate beneath the cardboard and I worried this would mean it would taste a little bit stale, but I was wrong. The little, thinner morsel of chocolate peeled off the plastic inner carton, fresh and delicious.

“And it didn’t taste like cheap chocolate either, it melted in my mouth, giving way to a sumptuous cocoa buttery texture. I was shocked because I had been sure it was going to be like that rubbish chocolate that never seems to want to melt.”

Kirsty was won over by Aldi’s festive product, not only because pf the price and quality of confectionery contained within its doors, but also as it harks back to a time when Christmases were not all about money and how much you spent.

She concluded: “There are a few reasons why I’d recommend this advent calendar specifically, and none of them are price; that speaks for itself. The chocolate is moreish and has you looking forward to the next day, the design is sweet, with recognisable characters and a little nod to a cult classic movie and each little chunk is just 14kcal.

“Moreover, it’s a memory of Christmases of the past, before toy companies and designers turned the concept of a door-a-day into an opportunity to cash-in to the max.”
