Aldi has announced it is set to become the latest supermarket to ditch 'best before' dates from a host of its own fresh produce in-stores.
The German discounted supermarket chain has said it plans to axe the dates from 60 of its own-branded lines of fruit and vegetables in a bid to help households tackle food waste.
Shoppers can expect to see the labelling changes across apples and pears, citrus fruits, potatoes, carrots and onions by the end of this year. It is the latest supermarket to ditch the 'best before' labels following criticism from climate change groups that they were "unnecessary" and "contributed towards climate change."
Waitrose, Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons and M&S have all made similar changes to their fresh fruit and vegetable packaging in-stores this year.
It is the latest move from the supermarket to combat food waste, which they have committed to reducing by 20% by 2025 and halve it by 2030.
As part of its commitment, the supermarket has also partnered with Neighbourly to donate 700,000 meals during the summer holidays.
It has also partnered with food surplus app 'Too Good To Go' to offer £10 worth of 'magic bags' that contain food nearing their 'use by date' for just £3.30.
Liz Fox, Corporate Responsibility Director at Aldi UK, said: “One of the reasons we are the UK’s cheapest supermarket is because we cut down on waste wherever we see it.
“And by getting rid of these dates on packaging, we can help customers get even better value by reducing the amount of food that goes to waste at home.
“This latest step, together with our partnerships with Neighbourly and Too Good To Go, is all part of our efforts to provide affordable, sustainable and responsible products for all our customers.”
