Aldi, Tesco, Lidl and Asda confirm closure plans for Queen's funeral bank holiday

On Monday, September 19, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral will take place and the nation will pause with a Bank Holiday. The Government says this will allow people, businesses, and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.

However, the right to a bank holiday day off is not automatic and some workplaces will be open. So which shops will and won't be open on Monday and if they're open will they be operating reduced trading hours?

We asked some of the biggest supermarkets for their response to the bank holiday. A number of retailers said they will close some of their largest stores, others are closing all stores and some supermarkets have said they'll close during certain hours. Here's what's happening across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Aldi

Aldi has taken the decision to close all of its stores across Nottinghamshire on Monday, September 19. It confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that: "As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores across the UK will close to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen".

Lidl

Lidl will also be closing its doors on Monday. The store thanked customers for understanding and said the move was: "In honour of Her Majesty and to allow our colleagues to pay their respects". The retailer said: "We will be closing all of our stores across England, Scotland and Wales on the day of Her Majesty’s funeral."

Tesco

Larger Tesco stores are to close for the day, with convenience stores opening from 5pm. In a post on Twitter, Tesco wrote: "We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family, as we mourn the loss of our longest-serving British monarch. We are indebted to her dedicated service to this country."

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s has said it will shut its main supermarkets and Argos shops. However, convenience shops and petrol filling stations will remain open during the evening.

Morrisons

Morrisons, at the time of writing, hadn't made a decision on whether stores would be closed, open or partially open. We'll update this story as soon as we know the details.

Asda

Across Nottingham and the county, Asda will close its stores on Monday, September 19, until 5pm. In a statement following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the company said it was "deeply saddened" by the news. It added: "For more than seven decades Her Majesty has been a constant in our lives. We are profoundly grateful for her extraordinary service to the nation and send our heartfelt condolences to The Royal Family.
