Aldi shoppers spot 'genius' M&S joke in Christmas advert 2022

Eagle-eyed Aldi shoppers have noticed a "brilliant" joke in its Christmas advert for this year about its infamous battle with Marks and Spencer.

Following a clash over caterpillar cakes, M&S took legal action against Aldi in a dispute that was settled earlier this year. But it looks like the feud may not quite be over yet.

In Aldi's Christmas advert, which was released earlier this week, Kevin the Carrot is all alone at home and decides to watch a game of football on TV, the Mirror reports.

But instead of tuning into a game from the upcoming World Cup, viewers realised he was watching something quite different. Instead, the carrot was enjoying a match between teams 'Cuth' and 'Col', with Cuth winning 1-0.

Aldi fans praised the hidden detail (Aldi)

People were quick to spot the cheeky detail and flocked to social media to say how impressed they were. One commenter asked: "Hang on is that Cuthburt v Colin?" adding a laughing emoji, and another replied: "OMG - yes it is!! Totally missed that."

Someone else thought the move was "brilliant," and another fan wrote: "Aldi’s Cuthbert 1, (I’m assuming M&S) Colin 0!!! Genius!" But it was not the only part of the clip that had viewers talking.

Elsewhere in the ad, viewers were divided over a scene involving a snowman.

As Kevin is escaping from the house, he used a snowman to cushion his landing. But instead of making "a hasty exit to become a snowman's nose", as the ad's narrator suggested, he landed much lower on the snowman's body.

People took this to mean something much ruder, with one person saying: "Not appropriate for an advert aimed at family viewing. The idea of a carrot for a snowman’s nose should have been exactly that."

But a different commenter said: "Aldi never fail to deliver. Subtle. But genius. Well played. My immature mind giggled."
