Aldi's middle aisle, also known as the Specialbuys aisle, is popular with shoppers who are looking for a bargain on anything from clothing to kitchen appliances. The budget supermarket launches new Specialbuys with 'unique and exciting products' every week.
Recently shoppers were equally delighted and mortified by an item they spotted in the middle aisle of their local store.
One shopper snapped a picture of the label, which read: "Perineum Spray" – a 75ml product which was priced down from £2.99 to just £1.99 – but people were confused about what the product was supposed to be used for.
Comedian Ellie Gibson posted the picture on Twitter, and commented: "After all this time the middle aisles of Aldi continues to surprise and delight."
Another social media user commented: "I refer to them as the magic mystery aisles."
It turns out Ellie wasn't the only one baffled by the product, with many questioning what it was for.
One user also asked: "Quick question: is this to be applied to the perineum or is it bottled perineal secretions?"
Ellie joked in response: "Will the answer affect your purchase decision?"
Another user commented about how "specific" the spray's usage was, saying: "Very specific. Not one inch to towards the bow or stern. Amidships only me hearties."
One person suggested it might be used as a fragrance, jokingly commenting: "Lynx Down Under?"
However, one person decided to educate everyone who hadn't heard of the spray before – and it turns out it has a very important use.
They commented: "It's for helping to prevent tears during labour, and heal them afterwards."
The Perineum Spray is part of Aldi's Mum To Be range, which is "designed to keep the body soothed and hydrated both during and after pregnancy".
On Aldi's website, it explains: "Created with lavender and tea tree oil, the Step Ahead Mum to Be Perineum Spray is designed to soothe perineal areas after birth.
"The dermatologically tested formulation cools and relieves soreness and discomfort, while supporting the skin’s natural healing process."
After finding out its true usage, one person added: "I'm sure that spray is designed to surprise and delight too."
Aldi has been contacted for comment.
