Aldi price hike means you can't buy two chicken breasts for less than £2.25 at any of the main supermarkets

A price hike at budget supermarket Aldi means that two chicken breasts can't be bought for less than £2.25 at any of the main supermarkets.

The cost of 300g of chicken has risen more than 25% at the store since we first began monitoring the cost of essentials in March. Back then, the same sized pack cost £1.79.

Aldi is still the cheapest for the meat - we reported just last week how Tesco had increased its pack to £2.40 - but it's adding further pressure to families who are already struggling with food and energy bills.

Our full basket of eight items - an 800g loaf, two pints of milk, 200g of coffee, 160 teabags, a 250g block of butter, a tin of beans, 300g of chicken and 500g of mince - could be picked up for £9.13 in March, when Aldi came out as cheapest overall.

Lidl maintains the cheapest spot at £10.51 for the shopping basket (Manchester Family / MEN)

This week's cheapest is Lidl, at £10.51, followed by Aldi at £10.91. There's no change to last week's positions in fact as Aldi's price rise is the only one this week.

Tesco remains third cheapest at £11.08, followed by Sainsbury's at £11.15, Asda at £11.18 and Morrisons, still the most expensive, at £11.50.
