French Open champion Alexander Zverev was on Monday guaranteed a place in the tennis record books as end-of-year world number one after his nearest challenger Carlos Alcaraz lost in the third round at the Shanghai Masters.
Zverev, the world number two, was already on course to reach the top of the ATP rankings for the first time, as world number one Jannik Sinner is out injured.
