Albion Rovers captaincy is a "real honour" for defender

Sean Fagan says it’s a real honour to have been made captain for Albion Rovers – but said boss Brian Reid didn’t tell him.

Fagan , 22, found out he was getting the armband when Reid told him before Saturday’s 3-2 Premier Sports Cup defeat at home to Livingston, but says he’s more than happy to carry the mantel.

Defender Fagan said: “It’s an honour and the gaffer never really said anything to me.

“In the first game he just made me captain!

“But I’m extremely proud to represent the club.”

Fagan says there was a mixture of disappointment and pride in Saturday’s performance against Premiership side Livingston.

The visitors were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes through Scott Pittman and Josh Mullin, with sub Bruce Anderson adding a third three minutes into the second half.

But when Ayrton Sonkur and Michael Paton bagged goals on their debuts, it provided a nervy finish for the top-flight side.

Going into tonight’s Cliftonhill cup clash against Cove Rangers, Fagan says they have to take heart from it.

He said: “Going 3-0 down is not the best, but the boys dug in, we got a goal, we got confidence from that and we grew.

“We put them under a bit of pressure, we were pushing for a third, and I’m kind of disappointed, but proud of what we did.

“We can take a lot out of that. We’re not going to come up against teams like that every week, and if we can do that against them we can do it against teams in our league.

“We conceded sloppy goals, but that was only our third game and it will come, once the boys gel more together.

“But we need to take that second-half performance, at least, into the season.”

Fagan says Rovers must be careful to give players a break during a demanding period that also sees them travel to Kelty Hearts in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday.

He said: “It’s a small squad we’ve got, so the players are going to have to rest up for Tuesday.

“It’s going to be like that for the full season – we’re going to have midweek games, it’s gong to be rotational, and we just need to go from there.”
