Alastair Campbell: 'Tories have made Britain the laughing stock of the world'

“Our politics are respected around the world,” said Liz Truss, shortly before she realised that her politics were not respected around the Tory backbenches, and off she went.

Nearer the mark is that our politics “were” respected over many years of both Tory and Labour governments, but thanks to this awful, chaotic period of British history, that respect is very much in the rear view mirror.

Thanks to Brexit, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, these charlatans have not merely crashed the economy but trashed our reputation around the world. And now the same people who gave us the two worst Prime Ministers in our history are saying they are the people to give us the next one.

The clowns who made the mess should be trusted to clear it up. Sod the people. Let’s leave it to the Tory Party.

So after four chancellors in four months we will be onto our fifth PM in six years. It is the kind of churn that Tories used to make jokes about in relation to Italy or third world banana republics. Now we are the ones being laughed at all over the world.

There is something very fitting about Johnson inserting himself into the chaos by letting speculation run riot that he will run to be PM again – despite being kicked out of Downing Street in disgrace so recently.

Because the tipping point into the decline our politics and our country have chosen came thanks to him, his lies and the Brexit they delivered, and the fact nobody has ever been held accountable for them.

It is evidence of his success in utterly debasing standards in public life that anyone should even begin to imagine he, a proven liar and lawbreaker, should be the answer to the huge challenges the country currently faces.

The good news is that they are finished. After 12 years of an unfair austerity programme, a chaotic and self-harming Brexit, and now the wrecking ball of the mini-budget the country has had enough. That explains their desperation to avoid a General Election. They’re done. And they’re deluded if they can’t see it.
