Alan Shearer takes aim at 'poor' Scotland insisting gulf to England is 'huge'

Alan Shearer has taken aim at "poor" Scotland insisting there was a "huge gulf" in class between Steve Clarke's side and England.

The Scots were outclassed at Hampden Park on Tuesday night as Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane grabbed goals in a 3-1 win for the Three Lions.

Shearer was delighted with the victory for England, but he believes Southgate's side did not have to play out of their skin to ensure they took the victory.

He told the Rest is Football podcast: "As the saying goes, you can only beat what is in front of you. England were very impressive albeit from what I thought was a very poor Scotland team. I know they have won five out of five and are flying in their group.

"There was a huge gulf in class. Scotland got a little bit excited when they got their own goal, other than that, maybe a McGinn chance with the header, England dominated. They made Scotland look average. It's a friendly, you are 2-0 up, I don't want to upset our Scottish listeners but come on. If you are an England player and you are sat in that squad and thinking, 'if he doesn't put his trust in me tonight of all nights, what can I do?'

"I think it was probably a rude awakening for them as not only have they improved massively, England have as well. They have done really well, five out of five, beaten Spain and going to qualify. But when you look at the bare facts of it and the ability of both teams, it was a bit of a mismatch."
