Alan Shearer slams 'stupid' Hugo Lloris in MOTD verdict amid 'magnificent' Newcastle praise

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has said that Newcastle United's performance yesterday was 'magnificent' after a 2-1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur yesterday afternoon.

The Magpies took the lead after 31 minutes after a calamitous error from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saw him come out of his box and collide with Callum Wilson who promptly got back up and slid the ball into an empty net.

The Frenchman and the rest of the Spurs players immediately surrounded referee Jarred Gillett but VAR had a good look and decided there was no foul in the build-up.

They'd find a second just nine minutes later when a poor pass from Lloris was intercepted by Sean Longstaff who headed it down to Miguel Almiron, who brushed past Ryan Sessegnon and Clement Lenglet to brilliantly finesse the ball into the back of the net for a two-goal lead and his fifth in five league games.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 last night, Shearer gave a scathing review of Lloris' performance but not before praising the effort Eddie Howe's side put in to get the goals.

"They look so fit. They are relentless in their pressing, their work rate, their togetherness and they have a tremendous team spirit and they all know what they're doing," the Newcastle United legend said. "Every single one of them knows what role they have, all on the same page.

"Other than the first 15 minutes, where they were under pressure a little bit, just have a look at the attitude of every Newcastle player here. Joelinton, he tracks back 30 or 40 yards to win the ball back, help his teammates out.

"And this setup here, they're inviting Lloris to do that [give the ball away for the second goal], they know he's not good with his feet and are saying 'Come on then, if you're stupid enough to do that, we'll take it off you.'

"Say what you want about Spurs defensively here, but from a Newcastle point of view and a Miguel Almiron point of view, that is magnificent. Pace, power and the ability to finish."

Shearer then continued to praise Newcastle's ability to press, and pressure Spurs players into making mistakes which they capitalised on.

"Murphy comes on and knows his role, I said they were all on the same page. He goes to his man and doesn't get it [the ball], so Wilson goes. He doesn't get it so Almiron goes. He doesn't get it so Longstaff goes and guess what? He gets it - it's just superb from the whole team.

"Lloris had a really poor game, they put him under constant pressure, won the ball back high up the pitch and then went and celebrated with the 3,000 fans. It really is great to see, it's magnificent."
