Alan Shearer slams 'flaky’ Tottenham as FA Cup upset marks another trophy-less season

Alan Shearer laid into "flaky" Tottenham over their "typical" FA Cup exit at the hands of Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

Spurs have made it 14 seasons without winning a trophy after they lost 1-0 after extra time to t he Championship side in their fifth round tie at Riverside Stadium.

After returning to winning ways with a dominant 4-0 victory over Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday, it looked like a potential turning point in Spurs’ season.

But the north London club slipped up once again by producing a lacklustre display.

Spurs had already bowed out of the Europa Conference League Group Stage in December, before falling to a semi-final defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup in January.

And with the loss against Middlesbrough ended any hope of winning a trophy this season, BBC Sport pundit and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer slammed Tottenham for another predictable showing.

Is Tottenham’s season effectively over following their FA Cup exit? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Speaking on the BBC, Shearer said: "This was no fluke. Spurs were so flaky, typical Tottenham.

“They (Middlesbrough) were the better team from start to finish. They were first to every tackle, they created chances, and had more energy.

“Certainly in extra-time, they made the better substitutions and Chris Wilder can be extremely proud of what his team has achieved tonight.

“What a night for Middlesbrough and their fans, he (Wilder) was up for it, the players were up for it, it's a shame the Tottenham players weren't up for it. Typical Tottenham, Middlesbrough thoroughly deserved to be in the quarter-finals.”

After a goalless 90 minutes at the Riverside Stadium, teenage substitute Josh Coburn’s 107th minute winner in extra-time secured the victory for the hosts and sent them through to the quarter-finals.

Conte had even started with the same XI that comfortably dispatched Leeds at Elland Road just three days prior, yet they couldn’t muster up the same performance against their lower league opposition.

Given that their hosts had lost two of their last three league games, including a 3-2 defeat to bottom club Barnsley at the weekend, it was a game that Spurs were fully expected to win.

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe said: “This is massively disappointing from a Tottenham point of view.

“No disrespect to Middlesbrough, you expect Tottenham to come here and dominate.

“Middlesbrough played with urgency and got stronger and stronger. Their younger players came on and made an impact.”

All that Tottenham have left to play for ahead of the remainder of the season is trying to achieve a top four finish, to at least put some glitter on another underwhelming campaign.

But even that seems like it could be too much of a stretch, as they currently sit in 7th and five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

They do have two games in hand, yet their inconsistent form offers no hope or promise that they can actually turn things around and produce the results that they need.
